Gruber Photographer’s New York Banquet Photography

If you think you have a large family, check this out …
265 Schwarz Strong.  That’s how many Schwarz descendants gathered to meet their relatives, some for the very first time, at their family reunion April 29th in South Orange, NJ.   What started as a family tree homework assignment, became a huge event with relatives flying in from all over the country.  As one of the attendees tells the NJ Jewish News, “Last time people were saying, What are you doing here? I’m a cousin. People were doing business with each other for 30 or 40 years and did not know they were related until they walked in!”

Twenty years ago at Schwarz’s first reunion, they captured the occasion with a banquet photo shot by Standard Flash. This year’s organizer had read “Making Sure No Guest is Forgotten” the Times article about our New York Banquet Photography services and called on Gruber to continue their family’s tradition.  As it turns out the Standard Flash photographer was our mentor Jayson using our camera twenty years earlier!

You can read more about this great event here.

The Coolest Hat-Wearing New Yorkers Captured in a Banquet Photo

Every April the Headwear Association a 104 year old organization dedicated to promoting the spirit of hat wearing gathers at one of Gruber’s favorite New york wedding venues: the Central Park Boathouse. Gentlemen were decked out in fedoras, derbys, homburgs and cowboy hats; the ladies were wearing everything from wide-brimmed statement hats to the chic, modern fascinator favored by 2012 Hat Person of the Year, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton.

Known originally as the Traveling Hat Salesmen’s Association the organization was founded on January 30, 1908 at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City by 34 hat salesmen. For the past 50 years the Headwear Association has respected the annual tradition of taking a banquet photo  at their dinner and for the eighth year Maike and I were on hand to set-up the lights, focus the shot and wait patiently until the exact right moment came.- Terry

New York City Fashion Shoot at Gruber Photographers

Several months ago when KIS GROUP called and asked me if I would like to be the featured photography expert on the KIS website my first thought was “Sure!” my next thought was, “What is KIS?!”  I discovered KIS is a great new website that offers members-only access to videos featuring experts in a variety of different fields.  You can get cool insider tips about things like how to choose an engagement ring from the VP of Van Cleef & Arpels, making the perfect corn chowder from Le Cirque’s executive chef, and of course, a video with my tips about shooting better vacation photos (use VIP code Gruber to access).

So last week when Jeremy Hodkin, our man from KIS, asked if I’d photograph the new landing page for a section on their website, “Kis Me” my first reaction was I’d love to as long as they would hire Elena Potapova, my stunning Oheka Castle bride and Next model.  So yesterday at Gruber, the studio was buzzing with, models, hair and makeup experts, a stylist, craft services, profoto flashes, and lots of kissing. The end result was tons of fun photos for the KIS Me page and today’s blog post.

Be a part of history at the 12-12-12 Maya Marriage of Many

298 Days.

That is the number of days left until 12.12.12.  Many believe that the world will end on December 12th, 2012, but many of the Maya in Belize, the epicenter of the ancient Mayan world, reject popular doomsday scenarios and instead see their 5,126-year calendar’s end as a joyous time of spiritual rebirth, renewal and new beginnings.

To celebrate new beginnings, especially romantic ones, I have signed on to be the Official International Photographer for the 2012 Maya Marriage of Many on December 12th, 2012, when 12 unique couples will get married en masse on the ancient Maya Ruin of Cahal Pecha, a 3,200 year old Mayan city.

If you are interested in finding out how to secure one of the 12 coveted spots, visit 2012weddingsbelize.com or RomanticTravelBelize.com.  I am looking forward to photographing the 12 lucky couples and their families!

A New York City Wedding at the Plaza – Heather & Dave

What better way to finish off the year than with a quintessential New York wedding at The Plaza?

Heather and Dave wanted their New York wedding photography to be modern and classic, clean and romantic and with the help of Lindsay Landman Events, their white wedding fantasy came to fruition. “Much of the vision for the day started with Heather’s absolute fascination with having glass dinner tables” says Landman. And paired with lucite chairs, white centerpieces and soft candlelight the affair was pure sophistication.

But our favorite aspect of the wedding was the established history that we have with the family that allowed us to capture the beautiful and intimate moments. Terry and Jeremy just photographed Heather’s identical twin sister’s wedding last year which helped them to understand the dynamics between the close-knit families to help tell their special wedding day story.

Congratulations to Heather and Dave. We hope to be a part of many more joyous family celebrations!

A New York City Wedding At The Plaza – Gayle and James

A few months ago, our New York wedding photographers, Terry and Zev, had the privilege of shooting Gayle and James’ wedding at The Plaza. Modern elegance combined with traditional Chinese design and decor was the theme behind their big day and was designed by the creative minds over at David Beahm Designs.

While the city was crippled by the unseasonal blizzard on October 29th, the groom’s mother happened to be delighted. In the Chinese tradition, snow on a couple’s wedding day is a sign of good luck!

Some highlights of the black-tie affair included three ice sculptures of New York, Chicago, and Hong Kong city-scapes where the couple live, met and were engaged respectively. A six-tiered Sylvia Weinstock wedding cake was custom made with an intricate floral design and stood surrounded by red, ormate lanterns. And following Chinese tradition, the bride changed into multiple wedding dresses throughout the night, saving a deep red Marchesa gown for the final dance. All in all, a magical New York City wedding.

Congratulations to Gayle and James!

Gruber Photographers Clients Get Creative

We love when our clients get creative and wanted to share a few of their great ideas that we recently came across!

Jordyn chose the theme of LIFE (the board game!) for her Bat Mitzvah and decided that images of her used throughout the party would showcase the different areas of her life and personality. Some of the photos were blown up and hung from the ceiling on screens, while others were used on giveaways and as table decoration.

And for Gerri and Charles’ Retro-Hollywood designed wedding, they thought it would be fun if ALL of their guests could take a photo with them! Two weeks before their big day, the couple posed for pictures at our studio adorned in their reception attire. They then chose one photo that was made into a life-sized cut out and during the reception guests had fun ‘posing’ with them (maybe a little too much fun).

We have over 1,000 square feet of in-house studio space and are always available for photo shoots so get creative! We will capture the very best of your personality be it glamorous to relaxed or serious to romantic if you want to add some personalization to your event!

New York City Wedding – Kerryn + Jackie

In 1998 Dr. Kerryn Phelps and her partner, Jackie Stricker traveled half way around the world from their native Australia to New York City in lieu of a religious ceremony to celebrate their love. Thirteen years later they returned to have their marriage legally recognized after New York became the 6th state in the US to recognize same-sex marriage. The couple contacted New York wedding photographer Terry Gruber to document their journey to New York’s City Hall Court House where dozens of same-sex couples have been flocking to become legally recognized life partners.

Terry captured the women walking into the Office of The City Clerk to sign the marriage license, then heading over to the State Office Building where the marriage ceremony took place. The same Rabbi who had presided over their ceremony thirteen years earlier was there to make their marriage official as the couple’s two daughters and niece stood close by, teary-eyed, as the two women exchanged vows.

Dr. Phelps is a medical practitioner and public commentator and Ms. Stricker-Phelps is a business woman and human rights activist both based in Sydney, Australia. Congratulations to Kerryn, Jackie, and their entire family!
